These are just a few of the benefits you can take advantage of when consuming coffee. So now, how do we create this keto coffee also known as bulletproof coffee? The recipe simply consists of blending black coffee, grass-fed butter, and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil for breakfast. This butter coffee has gained popularity amongst the low-carb, keto, and paleo communities as one of the ways to help start your day off with sustainable energy.
This popular fad isn’t a new discovery as it has been around for many years. The Sherpas of the Himalayas and the Gurage of Ethiopia have been adding butter to their coffee and tea for centuries. As people living in high-altitude areas would need more calories, adding butter to their morning cup was a simple, and easy way to get extra calories in for energy.
Coffee is extremely popular in our country and is a high-demand commodity that many do rely on to help them push through the day. Though there are some benefits to drinking coffee, if it’s becoming a stimulant that is needed constantly to stay up and moving all the time, I would suggest evaluating your daily routine to make sure you’re consuming the right amount of calories, getting enough sleep, and if necessary speak to a healthcare professional.

In terms of the individual ingredients in this coffee recipe, grass-fed butter contains higher amounts of anti-inflammatory omega-3 acids, beta carotene, and antioxidants. MCT oil promotes weight loss and helps improve cholesterol levels. Combine these two ingredients, with the benefits of coffee, and you have yourself quite a nice health concoction.
Drinking this high-fat beverage could help those on the keto diet maintain ketosis. A sense of feeling fuller longer can help you avoid binging on unnecessary foods and snacks.
Bulletproof, the downside
So, we’ve explored many of the great benefits, but there can be some potential downsides to the bulletproof coffee to consider. Since many people do substitute their breakfast for this high-fat beverage, just be mindful that as a meal replacement it does lack several nutrients. Bulletproof coffee is high in saturated fat which is still a controversial discussion, so do be cautious about your health and make sure this lines up with your dietary needs.
Lastly, for some people this morning habit may contribute to raising your cholesterol levels so, if you suffer from high cholesterol you may want to reconsider the bulletproof coffee, or consult with your primary care physician for further guidance.
